PDO Thread Lift: Dawn of the Non-Surgical Face Lift

Dubbed by some as the ‘lunch hour lift’, the PDO thread non-surgical face lift is a relatively new treatment in the cosmetic industry.A minimally invasive procedure that can be performed in as little time as one hour, a PDO thread face lift is an excellent option for those who want the results of a surgical face lift without the downtime and high financial cost typically associated with it.

But exactly what is a PDO thread lift?

We’ve put together a guide that will tell you everything you need to know. Keep reading to find out more!

What Are PDO Threads?

PDO stands for polydioxanone – a synthetic fibre which is widely used in general surgery as suture (stitches) material. PDO is bio-compatible and biodegradable, dissolving naturally in the human body over time. PDO threads are fine threads that can be implanted under the skin and used to enhance the appearance of various areas of the face, including:

  • Neck
  • Jowls/Jawline
  • Cheeks
  • Forehead and eyebrows
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines

Although botulinum toxin and dermal fillers can also be used to reduce the age-related changes that occur in these regions, PDO threads are considered to provide more effective and long-lasting results. Not only can PDO threads be used to lift sagging skin tissues and improve the texture and elasticity of the skin, they can also dissolve areas of fat in the lower face.

How is a PDO Thread Non-Surgical Face Lift Performed?

After administration of local anaesthetic, PDO threads are implanted into the subcutaneous layer of the skin using small needles preloaded with the threads. Although the PDO threads remain in the skin, they are invisible and not palpable.

Insertion of needles into the skin causes ‘micro-injuries’ which stimulates greater collagen synthesis and tissue contraction. 6-8 months following implantation, the threads begin to be absorbed into the body, stimulating the natural regeneration of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production.

How Long Does a PDO Thread Non-Surgical Face Lift Take?

A PDO thread non-surgical lift uses local anaesthetic and a typical thread lift procedure can take as little as one hour, but the total time is dependent on the number of threads the doctor uses and the areas being treated.

Results of a PDO Thread Lift

The PDO thread non-surgical face lift provide greater definition and lifting to the face, combatting signs of ageing and improving the general appearance of the skin. Although some of the effects of a PDO thread lift appear immediately, maximum results can be expected 6-8 months following treatment.

The initial increase in collagen results in a subtle but effective lift. As the threads are absorbed they stimulate the production of more collagen as well as elastin. The result of this is greater support for sagging skin, which helps to increase skin density and restore firmness to the skin. The production of hyaluronic acid helps to improve general skin quality. Improvements to skin metabolism, and blood and lymphatic circulation can also be seen, increasing skin firmness.

The overall results of a PDO thread non-surgical face lift are a more youthful appearance, with significant improvements in skin firmness and smoothness, as well as reduced laxity, folds and jowls. The collagen regeneration continues over time, working to improve the appearance of wrinkles and folds. The lifting effect reaches its peak at 6-8 months and can last for up to 2-3 years.

PDO Thread Lift Aftercare

Some mild swelling and bruising is expected after treatment, but this generally settles quickly. Patients will usually be able to continue with everyday activities immediately after treatment.

The Benefits of a PDO Thread Non-Surgical Face Lift

Clients are increasingly seeking PDO threads lifts as they can expect to achieve results comparable to a surgical facelift without having to incur the associated downtime, financial burden and risks of a general anaesthetic. Following treatment, clients have reported extremely positive results:

“The sagginess of my lower face had bothered me for years, but I’ve never been brave enough to have a surgical facelift. The PDO thread lift was a great option for me and I’m delighted with the results. I look and feel so refreshed and rejuvenated!”

“The treatment took hardly any time at all and the immediate results looked fantastic! My appearance has continued to improve over the months following treatment… I would definitely recommend the PDO thread lift.”

How Long do the Results of a PDO Thread Lift Last?

The lasting power of a thread lift depends on the age of the patient and how much sagging the thread lift has corrected. Sagging will return over time, but doctors have reported results lasting up to 3 years. There is also the option of having additional threads inserted to prolong the effects of PDO thread treatment.
