The Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetics: Everything You Need to Know to Become a Safe & Trusted Aesthetic Practitioner

The Level 7 Diploma in Clinical Aesthetic Injectable Therapies is a qualification that was devised in order to standardise the quality and content of the training available to practitioners of non-surgical aesthetics procedures. Tighter general regulations on non-surgical interventions were implemented after a report by Health Education England (HEE) outlined the required levels of competence for all treatments in the industry. A regulatory framework was created collaboratively between a number of associations, enforced by two independent bodies – the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) and the Cosmetic Practitioners’ Standards Authority (CPSA.)

In simple terms, this means that there are more stringent general regulations in place, limiting those who are able to satisfy the necessary standards for practice to those who are suitably qualified, and thereby increasing the safety of patients.

The Level 7 Diploma will now replace the Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine, which was previously awarded by Acquisition Aesthetics through Industry Qualifications. This certificate was withdrawn in June 2020 and is no longer available to new registrants.

Why would I choose to complete the Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetics?

The Level 7 Diploma in aesthetics will provide delegates with a postgraduate level of understanding in a number of key areas within non-surgical aesthetics. This includes facial anatomy, skin physiology, and dermatological indications/contraindications of treatment.

Delegates will also learn how to undertake an effective consultation with patients including a systematic facial assessment. A deeper understanding of injection techniques will be achieved, as well as increased competence in complications management when working with toxin and dermal fillers.

Industry regulations are forecast to become even more robust in the coming months and years, with the Level 7 Diploma recognised from a legal and ethical perspective as the minimum accepted level of training for UK aesthetics practitioners.

Level 7 delegates are, therefore ‘future-proofing’ their training and practice; ensuring they will be compliant with the latest regulatory guidance and in line with GMC, GDC and NMC principles of practice.

  • Graduate with an extensive portfolio of evidence which you can showcase to future employers and clients.
  • Train under industry experts and benefit from their unique tips and insight.
  • Collect 400 CPD points towards your annual revalidation.

Who is the Awarding Organisation?

OTHM Qualifications are a UK based and internationally recognised Awarding Organisation approved and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (OfQual). They have a wide global network of delivery centres that deliver a range of programmes. OTHM Qualifications is a forward-thinking organisation; supporting industry by providing excellent qualifications and enabling a highly qualified and experienced workforce.

I already started the Level 7 Certificate. Can I switch to the Diploma?

Absolutely. The Level 7 Certificate in Injectables for Aesthetic Medicine through the awarding body SFJ Awards still represents the gold-standard of Aesthetic Medicine training, and learners enrolled on this pathway prior to its withdrawal can still proceed with this qualification if they wish. For anyone considering a transition to the Level 7 Diploma in aesthetics, we would advise they move over to the new awarding body and complete the Level 7 Diploma through Recognition of Prior Learning. This method of assessment would allow the new awarding body to take into consideration all of the work you have already completed towards your Level 7 Certificate, and then advise on what additional work would be required in order for you to attain the Diploma. You would absolutely not be required to redo your coursework, and we would still encourage you to complete it as it will contribute to the Diploma.

As you will be aware, a level 7 qualification is a postgraduate level of study. Level 7 qualifications vary in terms of the qualification hours and credits required to achieve the qualification. An Award is usually 12 credits or more, a Certificate 13 to 36 credits and a Diploma is 37 or more credits. A Diploma represents a higher competency level and therefore requires more hours of study. Our level 7 Diploma is worth 60 credits at Level 7. Please note that due to the much higher level of qualification and the fees associated with the new awarding body, there would be an additional cost for this process.

Should you already be an experienced aesthetician looking to gain Level 7 accreditation, it may be possible for you to undertake this qualification via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This pathway utilises a method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers a candidate’s pre-existing knowledge and skills, negating the need for further training in that area.

What does the Level 7 Diploma involve?

  • Theoretical Training

Access is provided to an extensive library of online learning materials based upon key learning components highlighted by the HEE comprising lectures, literature papers, current evidence, guidelines, and forums. Theoretical learning and training videos provided are relevant to the learning objectives of the course, including references to other literature and case studies. All material is designed and written exclusively by Oral, Maxillofacial, Plastic, Dental, and Consultant Surgeons.

  • Practical Training

Foundation and Advanced training days in addition to focused mentoring sessions to complete your portfolio. Optional Complications, Tear Trough and Lip Augmentation masterclasses.

  • Academic Portfolio

Along with delegates’ own research and completion of theoretical training, there will be a requirement to complete an academic portfolio comprising referenced essays, a critical appraisal, and case studies.

  • Practical Portfolio

Your practical portfolio comprises a logbook facility to record all 40 procedures (20 observed and 20 performed) in toxin and dermal filler modalities. These 40 procedures are to be obtained on mentoring sessions with expert supervision, in small practical training groups. This will include DOPS (Direct Observation of Procedural Skills) – supervised learning and assessment of procedural skills.
